Soulful Gumbo

Here's another mix from back in the days when I was spinning wax in public and working with compact discs, "in the lab" as it were. This is one of my favourites because it kind of travels from genre to genre from country to country. It's been so long I've forgotten most of the track titles and artists; pardon my bad memory. In any case hope you enjoy. Whet Granny PanniesJune 21, 2011 06:29 PM PDT
From the "Funk from the Trunk" series comes a collection of old school basement slow jams. If you've never been to a west philly basement party, with christmas lights, one turn table (sometimes 2, but no proper mixer) than kick back and imagine yourself whisked back into the late 1970s.. low ceilings, paneling on the walls and funk penetrating the radio. It was the era just before hip-hop came into the underground... Enjoy my friends..

This is one of my favorite mixes, a deep house melange featuring all female vocals. Also, I'm posting this episode for all the hard core fitness femmes from the Spring 1&2 Sessions of PUMPED the GX (group exercise)Sessions I lead at Temple University this year. You (about a dozen who never misses a session) were the best crew ever. You really worked hard. I could see it in your sweat (i knew, "eeeeew" right) and the ways you pushed beyond your limits. You guys rock!! The link to this should be pasted on your FB pages that is of course if you "friended" me. (Ha ha inside joke). Since most of the PUMPED Crew knows me as a GX Trainer, I probably should put a bit of the DJ Rez up here... Known as DJ SOMA (Sexiest Ole Man Alive) I started spinning on WPPR (West Philly Pirate Radio) in 1996, from there went to underground warehouse parties and eventually to clubs in Old City and NoLibs where I started the Ethno-House Movement. Had some great times. Probably the most popular venue was St. Jack's "My Man Friday" sets.... But you'd have had to have been there to really appreciate it. I gave up the decks and focused on fitness in 05/06... so if our GX Sessions have a night club/party feel, now you know why. Enjoy the le melange. (Find me of FB noxsoma@yahoo.com) Welcome!

About DJ Noxsoma (SOMA)I've made probably a dozen mix cds in the past ten years, some just for kicks, others as demos to get gigs and a few have been experimental. I guess I'll post them up here as I find them. The first episode is a total nostalgic flashback to the My Man Friday Year's at St. Jack's in Old City. I got to play what I liked and had a great time hosting the set. The people who commented most on the music were foreigners; Europeans, Australians and one night we even had some German-Turks in the mix and they blazed up the dance floor. Fun times. Wish I could find a venue and the ambition to do something like that again... however i think it would end up being a lame-o remake of a hit TV series. We'll just have to remember. My Man Friday: St. Jack's Session circa January 2003. Followers
